There’s a tension in this story no one has zoomed in on, which is Cohen’s contention that Trump never thought he would win *and also* would do anything to win. It’s a resolvable tension but would be interesting to hear him reconcile them.

I have also wondered if Trump thought he could pull off the ultimate brand enhancement. Lose in a very close, controversial way in which he could play the "robbed" person. The set up his network or something.

Exactly. Just because he didn’t think he could win doesn’t mean he didn’t want to. And his ego wouldn’t let him not try everything in his power to win, even if he didn’t think it would work. He physically couldn’t NOT do everything.
