I thought Green Book was a perfectly enjoyable movie, corny and somewhat blinkered, but certainly no worse and in some cases better than recent best picture winners, won't be reading replies

Last word on Green Book: it's pretty on-brand for the Oscars to prefer a trite wishy washy liberal message movie over either challenging art (Roma, The Favorite) or robust, lively entertainment (Black Panther, Star is Born).

This. Members often seem to vote for films that reinforce their self-regard as virtuous, smart, woke and so forth. The "social justice" vote, for which Crash is a good example imo. (Caveats: some are actually good films of course, and voters may have actually seen them, etc)

The preferential voting system made that even more the case.

Black Panther was robust, lively entertainment *and* challenging art. It forced us to consider the impact of colonialism and slavery on the well-being of all humanity and confronted us with the beauty of the indigenous African cosmology that white supremacist culture devalues.

The fact that the Academy couldn’t recognize how game-changing Black Panther was is rooted in anti-Blackness. Beginning and end of discussion.

I guess "Green Book" is more Liberal than most Americans can handle these days. A reverse "Driving Miss Daisy" carefully manufactured to win that specific award.
