Vineyards usage is a bit confusing though. Parable of the vineyard would suggest johnny-come-latelies are just as deserving of the full reward, in this case being called a populist.

Isn't this a problem of definition? I know in the US it's traditionally been associated with progressive or egalitarian politics, but those who study populism would describe it anti-pluralist: a moral claim that they and they alone represent “the real people”.
