I may be unusual, but I think deregulating airlines, putting Volcker at the Fed, and committing to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan were all good ideas

Right, there's a substantial procedural critique of Carter. On an ideological level he was very consequential: arguably initiating the neo-liberal era, which can be seen either as bad (by me) or good (by @M_C_Klein)

Do you recommend a book about this? (Carter fathering the neoliberal era and the contrasting points of view on the good or harm that have resulted)

Interesting way to frame presidencies. Carter never had his party close ranks for him the way we've seen with DT. But yeah, with my heart in both places, I'd like to read a thoughtful debate about neoliberalism, it's roots with Carter, and across-the-aisle style democrats.

I don't know if anyone has quite made the argument but it seems obvious to me that Carter initiated many aspects of neoliberalism. I suspect @rickperlstein's next book will take up the argument

Judith Stein describes Carter's neoliberalism in Pivotal Decade and is scathing in her assessment of his presidency.
