I will admit uncertainty here: this came from Colm Toíbín’s excellent essay in Henry James & American Painting, sourced to Michael Anesko’s Monopolizing the Master (2000). The “distinguished thing” line seems to have been what James says he thought amid a stroke 10 days earlier.
