No, David, and I find this a bit offensive. Sanders’ libertarian view considers being LGBT to be an issue of sexual behavior or how one dresses, NOT one of wholistic humanity. And he supported the march only for 1st Amend reasons. THIS was cutting edge:https://twitter.com/briantashman/status/1064626776184373248 …

A tiny city of less than 40K people total. It was more progressive than many because people from the Northeastern colleges moved there for quality of life reasons. It’s a beautiful place. I’d suggest Burlington’s progressiveness is why Sanders was mayor, not vice versa.

The whole libertarian Victorian-era “do what you want just don’t scare the horses” perspective doesn’t get points from me. It’s reductive of our identities and lives. He even used the term “lifestyle” which anyone who *really* cared in 1987 knew not to use.

Based on his own words, he viewed LGBT people as people for whom as a population he did not intend to prioritize any action. He essentially was saying he wouldn’t arrest people under sodomy laws or actively target us. That’s not progressive by any stretch of the imagination.

Supporting a Pride Parade in 1983, against the opposition of other local politicians, isn't progressive? Really? In Toronto a Mayor didn't attend pride till 1995 (and later Mayor, Rob Ford, boycotted event).

Not in historical or college-town related context, no. The first pride parades in NY, SF, and LA were in 1970 –– 13 years earlier. Buffalo's first one was 1972. Houston's first (legal) one was in 1979 (informal ones took place for years before that). Northampton's was 1982.

Bernie Sanders' perspective as described by him in the statement from 1983 is libertarian, not progressive, then or now. He is essentially, as I noted above, saying even queers have 1st amendment rights and he won't prosecute us under the then-existing sodomy laws. That's it.pic.twitter.com/Mrns5DGZb6

If the LGBTQ activist who was alive during a period of time says that a political decision wasn't progressive, then it wasn't progressive. Arguing otherwise is like arguing with John Lewis about what people were during during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.

I have been active in LGBT politics since 1986. I think Bernie's views are and were progressive. I would also note there is a 1972(!) article with Bernie calling for the elimination of all laws against gays.

a you try to make bernie another harvey milk the way his loyalists try to make sanders another dr king jr for 1 protest in the early 60s. bernie is not consistent, and considers lgbtq issues a distraction. one parade 36yrs ago, he did not even march in, does not change that

Bernie had to be dragged kicking and screaming into acknowledging us LGBTQ folks exist during the 2016 campaign, he can't even say LGBTQ without stumbling over himself
