I've never seen or read Dune. Can't decide if I should go through the book(s) and/or the 1984 film before seeing the new one or if I should just go in cold.

I actually love the Lynch movie but I think if you haven't read the book or aren't stoned on acid, it's difficult to understand.

The issue with SyFy's adaptation is that it reduces the story to nothing more than political maneuvering. The spiritual soul, so well represented in Lynch's Dune, is entirely absent.
