Weak presidents are dangerous. In some respects, more so than strong ones. They're probably more likely to use improper methods to try to get things done they can't do using normal influence. Nixon hires the Plumbers because he can't get the FBI to do things.

Exactly. Incompetence & authoritarianism have a complex interaction. Incompetence can mitigate authoritarianism but it can also intensify it. Really depends on circumstances.
