My God, I had never read that bit of idiocy from Hitchens before.
Be very clear that citing what a CHARACTER in a fictional drama says or does offers zero assurance that it reflects in any way on the WRITER's overall or specific beliefs or politics. And in the case of a TV drama, even that you know the actual author of the given dialogue.
Wait I'm confused, when in The Wire is Obama even mentioned? Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought the show ended around the time of the primaries anyway. Or do you just mean the general idea of questioning whether someone is *really* black?
I don't know offhand the dialogue he's referring to either, but whatever the reference is would reflect the rhetoric and logic of THAT character. My only point here.
Yea, totally agree with you either way. Writers are definitely responsible for what they put out into the world, but it's mindboggling when people try to ascribe a character's views to the writer without any evidence. Much respect for your work and your output on here
I soured forever on this nonsense when John Goodman's soliloquy in the Treme pilot on San Francisco being a cesspool with hills was taken as my gospel. Especially when it was Eric Overmyer who had fashioned a real collective of post-Katrina voices into that character's rant.
Alas, there are just some people who don't know how art works.
Still not exactly sure what you're referring to in the show, but I doubt it's a reflection of Obama since S4 aired in '06 before Obama had really exploded onto the national scene. There is obviously gatekeeping within minority communities about who belongs, but the issue is that
