I'm about ready to declare that Sidney Hook's two Marx books from 1932 & 1936 are the best example of American Marxism, & moreover some of the best works of Marxism in the 20th century, anywhere. Alas, it was all downhill for Hook after those books, & his decline was steep. #USIH

Have you read Hook's son's intro to the first re-issue of "Towards an Understanding of Karl Marx"? Apparently he was a staunch enough anti-communist to withhold the rights to re-publish for years. Didn't Phelps write an intro to that too?

It would be great for someone to give a better answer than Phelps for Hook's turn to the right. He basically pins it all on Hook's embrace of the category of "totalitarianism." Quite a non-explanation in an otherwise very thorough book.
