watching SOLO and i am already mad as hell at the apparent “origin” of Han Solo’s name

Also, that anyone thought those particular characters were interesting on their own in the first place. Han Solo is only interesting because he's the devil-may-care swashbuckler next to the earnest Luke Skywalker and the caring-yet-savvy Princess Leia.

Star Wars has less excuse for not having learned this lesson than most. Its entire community spent a decade writing post-mortems on a set of prequels.

the flip side is that if we meet the character at the beginning of their journey to become who they are (The Matrix), we're way *less* interested in later films (sequels)

The worst part of Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption was finding out exactly what Red did. Didn't need to know. Better not knowing. The Star Wars prequels get more malice than deserved but reality is Vader is more interesting with no origin. You're right.

Not sure I agree. I very much wanted to see how Vader became who he was. A convincing, sympathetic view of that change would have been amazing. Instead we got cliche dressed up with some of the worst dialog written for any movie ever.

i think this is my take as well.

Anakin becoming Vader is actual character development though. Han in IV is exactly the same as he in Solo.

Great point. That’s why I have zero enthusiasm about the upcoming prequel to The Sopranos — James Gandolfini is the one and ONLY Tony Soprano.

This is why I loved the way Glover played Lando. Everything about the way he played it was already Lando, deliciously Lando, not "Here's how he became Lando".
