We finally have a president who agrees with Alexander Cockburn! It's too bad it had to be Trump.https://twitter.com/jonathanchait/status/1080820323065319424 …

Trump says the Soviets were right to invade Afghanistan. Who gave him that bizarre idea? http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/01/trump-defends-soviet-invasion-of-afghanistan-for-some-reason.html …

Seriously? I am loathe to "defend" Trump, but I'm pretty sure he was literally just emphasizing the distance between Afghanistan and the US and listing the countries that border Afghanistan (which is impressive knowledge by his standards).

“The reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia,” he told reporters today. “They were right to be there. The problem is, it was a tough fight."

That's new. I still don't think that matches the actual reasoning behind the Soviet invasion, nor does it reflect any plausible opinion Putin might have about that decades-old conflict.

The view of history Trump is giving (that Afghanistan was a threat to Russia, which launched a defensive invasion against terrorists, and which ended bankrupting the USSR) is basically the standard Russian view. No evidence it came from Putin, of course.

Little question Afghanistan because of the financial cost and political humiliation did help the Andropov-Gorbachev faction sell Perestroika as a economic solution to problems in Soviet economy. Although true that 90s privatization pulverized economy far more than Afghanistan.

Right, is it more likely that Trump is getting systematically indoctrinated by Putin on this issue or that he has always watched a ton of TV?

Sure, but that's only one part of what Trump said (bankruptcy). The other stuff (Afghanistan being terrorist in 1970s & USSR being justified to go in) is not something you'd here on USA TV in 1990s or at anytime.

And as I said, you can get there by simply projecting the US rationale for invasion onto Afghanistan. Presumably a hardened racist would be prone to believe that "terrorism" is an intrinsic feature of that country.

At the end of the day, though, I simply do not believe Trump is intelligent enough to be "trained" by Putin at this level of detail. It just does not add up for me.
