I'm less convinced about the Chinese character simplification comparison. The simplification of characters, while very controversial, has clear benefits aside from political signaling.

I hadn’t realized until recently that Mao actually had toyed with the idea of getting rid of characters. And simplifications and pinyin were the obviously far less dramatic reforms he settled on.
