Breaking - our David Martin reports that @realDonaldTrump will order SecDef Mattis to leave his Pentagon post immediately rather than work through the February 28 date he cited in his resignation letter. Deputy Patrick Shanahan to step into role. SAO confirmed.

Summarily firing a guy nicknamed "Mad Dog" -- in fact telling him to immediately leave the one place he's worked all his life -- might not be a smart move.

Worth pondering that other Trump officials who are fired or quit have many reasons not to speak out: NDAs or membership of GOP, need for future jobs in wing-nut circuit, complicity in corruption. Mattis doesn't have anything like that. He doesn't have to hold back.

One other thing: a big part of Mattis' job in last two years was holding the hands of allies (especially France & Germany) & reassuring them that USA was reliable ally & to disregard Trump's tantrums. How are they going to interpret all this?

^. A lot of the post op coverage of Matt is letter seemed to focus on disagreements over treating enemies like enemies, and less on how Mattis also said we need to be treating allies like allies.

We should consider ourselves lucky that Gen. Mattis lasted as long as he did, considering that Trump only selected him because Mattis bears an uncanny resemblance to Gen. Patton.

Yeah, I hope so. We’re past the point where the stabilizing effect of subdued, standard diplomatic phrasing is more valuable than avoiding the panic direct alarm may cause.

I think it’s more a matter of him offering reassurance that no matter what nonsense the volatile top guy uttered, there was someone working on still honoring commitments and so forth. Not sure that’s actually a solution to having Trump as a leader, myself.
