Too much focus on Trump as Nixon, not enough focus on Trump as Hoover.

There's something to that but Hoover was a smart guy and (outside of politics) a competent one.

The autocratic tendencies of Nixon, the policy disasters of Hoover, the venality of Harding

As much Kaiser Wilhelm II as any American President.

FWIW, 1928 and 2016 were similar insofar as they were both high-water-marks for GOP control of the White House, Senate, House, Courts, Governor's Mansions, & State Legislatures. In 1930 the Dems gained 52 seats to take the House, although GOP maintained control of the Senate.

Hoover was a smart guy trapped in a bad paradigm. It took 60 years before that paradigm came back to power with Reagan.

Yeah, I tend to think of guys like Jeff Flake as the Hoovers of our time, basically decent human beings who are totally inadequate to the task at hand because of outdated views on policy.

Hoover's work in post-war relief and his genuine concern for victims of famine is about as far from Trump as you can get. Hoover's work with the ARA saved millions of lives. Maybe a bad president, but a better human by far than Trump (probably goes without saying).
