5. With George Papadopoulos as well, there's a tension between serving two masters, the legal system that wants submission & the Fox/InfoWars/QAnon audience that wants conspiracy theories. I think this tension will recur in future Trump trials.

Justice system wants you to admit guilt when you get a plea deal. You don't have to admit anything if you're found guilty at trial. The admission is part of the deal, when you strike a deal. Seems fair to me. Whole lot better than torture.

Pre-modern (as well as many modern, sadly) justice systems were centered on retribution, even vengeance. More civilised (arguably) want 'rehabilitation' - otherside whats the frigging point? - hence the focus on 'remorse' (ie, internal levy)
