That totally misses the point. They should br the center of a new sane opposition party which pretty much by definition means they aren’t part of the current one.

It’s what Chait says—they want to be a more creative version of centrist Dems vs. a Bernie/AOC Democratic Party. Tbh, that would be a great outcome, would make them just normal center-right advanced party, not crackpot combo of revanchist/libertarian plutocrats.
