Polling shows that only 6%-12% of Sanders voters didn't vote for Clinton, as against roughly 25% of Clinton voters who didn't vote for Obama in 2008. Which sort of shows that in the real world (as against social media) the Russian bots weren't effective.https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2017/08/24/did-enough-bernie-sanders-supporters-vote-for-trump-to-cost-clinton-the-election/?utm_term=.827fe261fc72 …

More importantly the Democratic party chose a candidate that was so bad that a host of minor factors could have cost her the election to a doofus. Maybe Clinton acolytes should try grappling with that!

I am frustrated with the linear thinking on this by many men who did not experience the harassment and intimidation so many women did on social media. None of the reports have yet addressed that aspect of the active measures, which is also frustrating. 1/x

For the entirety of the campaign, women who talked about supporting HRC were instantly attacked. I had only 12K followers at the time and I experienced every vulgar name, rape threats, and death threats. It was intimidating and had the effect of silencing public enthusiasm. 2/x

W/o getting into debate about whether or not this aspect of the multi-dimensional strategy was the “tipping point", can we at least agree we aren’t talking about “bots”? These were human-operated accounts w/ multi-platform personas that interacted w/ US media & political “elites"
-
Exactly. And to the extent there were “bots”, they were accounts created with tailored algorithms and personas that *changed and adapted over time* based on what was most effective (at least that was my experience on Twitter). They were NOT simply repetitively posting memes/msgs.

I would ask Nate that question again today. There is a lot of new information since he said that.

The idea that a deliberate, widespread and intensive Russian campaign to drive Sanders supporters away from Clinton had no effect in an election that featured Sanders supporters not voting for Clinton despite the existential threat posed by a Trump win- that seems strange to me.
