can we speak of a William Empson fandom and if not why not

Beyond the neckbeard, I think Empson was a great, if at times irresponsible, critic. But the irresponsibility is part of the charm. I've only read a few of the poems. Should maybe read more.

Good poet, great critic. Maybe irresponsible w drama (I'm not equipped to judge) but w Donne & Marvell the "responsible" critics keep coming around to his claims

Oh year, the Donne the Spaceman essay is great. By irresponsible I'm thinking of, say, his argument that the Blooms & Daedelus end up in a threesome after the novel ends.

Great tradition of fix-it fic for bisexual erasure in major canonical works (see also Bronze Age X-Men)

Makes me a little sad that he and Kenner hated each other. They had a shared quirkiness that should've made them more sympathetic to each other.

They were. I'm working on a review of the Kenner/Davenport letters that takes this up. Trying to figure out if Kenner cooled to Davenport when Davenport's bisexuality became more evident in his fiction.
