Beyond the neckbeard, I think Empson was a great, if at times irresponsible, critic. But the irresponsibility is part of the charm. I've only read a few of the poems. Should maybe read more.

Good poet, great critic. Maybe irresponsible w drama (I'm not equipped to judge) but w Donne & Marvell the "responsible" critics keep coming around to his claims

Oh year, the Donne the Spaceman essay is great. By irresponsible I'm thinking of, say, his argument that the Blooms & Daedelus end up in a threesome after the novel ends.

That's a good point. There is an element of fan-fiction in Empson. He's reading into what should be there but isn't. And often he's right.
