1. To impeach or not to impeach? That is the question. It just got a lot more real with the new determination that Trump directed Cohen to commit a crime. https://twitter.com/jonfavs/status/1071175435206049792 …

If Mueller’s report indicates the president likely committed a felony or felonies, the pressure from very serious people to pardon him upon arriving in office will be immense.

I guess under either frame you play odds - which is more likely: 20 GOP Senators flip or a Dem can get 270 electoral votes. Tough either way, I’d say. So why not force both?
-
To me, the chance of getting 20 republican senators to convict is close to 0%, regardless of evidence. They’d lose their next primary in a landslide.

The path is to act in a way that will hold up 10/20/30 years from now. Thinking short term politically (as the GOP did by embracing Palin and Trump) leads to decisions that crush you long term.

My question is, if the best course for removal is elections, where is the punishment for the misdeeds of the president to keep this from being repeated by the next scumbag administration

The realities of the situation make it a simple choice. 1) Impeachment's pointless (even counter-productive) w/o a good chance of success. The only way to get there is 2) Mueller + hearings produce tons of irrefutable evidence that even GOPers can't ignore. Horse, then cart.
-
GOPers can ignore anything, and likely would. A republican senator that voted to impeach, even with guilt being clear as day, would lose their primary by 40 points.

Not just trump! The gop senate majority that had enabled him. Best and quickest route is exposing them.

The greater goal has to be restoring trust in democracy & in our country’s ability to live up to its best ideals. I don’t know how that changes the decisions but it cannot be ignored.

I think you’re dreaming and it’s closer to 0%, even if irrefutable evidence is presented. They’ll say “well the voters can decide in 2020”. Any republican senator that votes to convict would get demolished in a primary
