I watch a lot of TCM movies and if movies like "It Happened One Night" and "Philadelphia Story" are any indication of the "zeitgeist" there was a lot of display of wealth in the 1930s (if you had money, it went a long way and lots of cheap labor). Poor daydreamed of being rich.

The movies displayed wealth but I think there's reason to think that actual wealthy people started being a bit less ostentatious post. 1929, for political reasons.
