1. This is a tempting stance but a bit too glib. No magazine should be judged just by its worst moments. Aside from lots of neo-con boilerplate, The Weekly Standard has had some sterling writing. It's been more consistently anti-Trump than any other conservative publication. https://twitter.com/DavidKlion/status/1070099216326905856 …

7. The Weekly Standard facing possible closure comes on the heel of the deaths of Charles Krauthammer, John McCain and George H. W. Bush. It really does feel like a particular strand of the American right is coming to an end.

pretty sure the evil they've done for neoconservativism far, far, outweighs a few good book reviews.

Being ideologically and intellectually consistent in the name of an evil ideology is not morally better than being inconsistent. hypocrisy is overrated as a bad thing.

Didn't you just (correctly) make the opposite about GHWB? That though he seemed humane and intellectual, his real policies were destructive and wrongheaded. Isn't the exact same thing true of TWS?

Buckley's original insight was "throw out the nuts and we have a future." But the nuts have come tumbling down and now fill the barrel.

I have a hard time seeing "Trumpism" take over much of anything when its so empty if ideology. Trump is a pure reactionary who gravitates to the path of least resistance, with a primitive but effective grasp of manipulating human nature to get what he wants.
-
"Trumpism" isn't a movement so much as a bandwagon of snake oil peddling hucksters attached to one bizarrely charismatic figurehead. There really isn't anything to endure past the man.
