Jesse Walker added,
Gregory's book is actually pretty serious, though it does have jokes in it. Fields' is one long comedy routine.pic.twitter.com/xjP3rUFvke
Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail surely?
We are speaking of books by candidates, not books by journalists. Obviously there are lots of good books *about* elections.
Did you ever read Huey Long's book about what he would do if he were president?
Me neither. On a completely different note, I’m reading Claud Cockburn’s three volumes of memoirs now, on the recommendation of @seatrout . You’d both enjoy them if you somehow haven’t read them - magnificently scurrilous.
I was just thinking of reading those because I'm on an Anthony Powell kick & I think there's stuff in there about Punch in the Muggeridge/Powell era.
Haven’t got there yet (there have been a couple of asides about Muggeridge but no more), but his account of how he made the Cliveden set into the Cliveden set (recounted twice) is extremely interesting sociology of journalism (also of possible interest to @BluejoWalton )
Am I hallucinating a passage in Kingsley Amis's memoirs about a disastrous threesome with Muggeridge and Sonia Orwell?
Alas, not hallucinating. That's in there.
