Bailing out Canada's newspapers at this specific moment is hitting "pause" on Canadian journalism at the worst possible scene. The papers have never been worse. They won't improve on gov't life support. We'll just preserve a shitty status quo & lock out new players indefinitely

I support public broadcasting while recognizing the simple fact that gov't funding permanently compromises its independence. At a bare minimum, it is a perceived conflict of interest. Sometimes it is a practical one. To extend this to the entire press? That's a very big deal.

Do you honestly believe the independence of CBC is less than that of Postmedia prior to this new funding?

While I’m a supporter of having a state broadcaster as part of the press...having ONLY state broadcasters or increasing concentration of state-owned or funded media can hardly be considered exemplary for a free press.
