I don’t think you mean it to be, but I think this is an awful take on the tweet

Calling a serious concern about DV attitudes in economics and their effect on classmates a “cheap shot” is an awful thing to say even if you come to a different conclusion on Becker, and when you call responses that are (in most cases) equally serious a “mob” that’s also awful.

Again I’m sure you had a different intent but this is going from disagreement to some bad territory fast so I’m trying to put up guardrails and raise the issue. That kind of dismissive reaction is what makes people feel unsafe reporting.

People are calling for econ departments to be abolished, Becker a fascist, econs sociopaths, all kinds of things over this. It absolutely strikes me as cheap to reduce Becker's enormous work to a single vaguely recalled incident, the seriousness of a topic doesn't grant...

Arin did not reduce Becker’s work to that incident

But others, like @HeerJeet, are using that tweet to do exactly that. An entirely predictable outcome that's hard to imagine anyone not realising would happen.

So it sounds like your concern is with @HeerJeet not Arin? I didn’t see his response. I don’t think it’s a good idea to say that people shouldn’t raise these criticisms because someone might react in a way we don’t like. Someone *always* reacts in a way we don’t like.

That’s not a good excuse for giving these things a pass.

Jeet's response wasn't even *that bad* compared to many others I saw. And giving *what* a pass? I'm still unsure what we're supposed to think his views on DV actually are, that could need "passing"?

Becker's work has a lot of gender problems, which feminists economists have commented on for decades. I think the tweets (there are more) gives a fair example of why people objected to his work on those grounds.

Yes it goes beyond this for sure (take classes at @AU_PGAE to learn more gender economics!).

I hadn’t read your RT before and I think at worst it could be a cheap shot against libertarians (but it’s Twitter, come on). But there are real reasons for concern with Becker even though he’s critical to know for gender economics.

I really don't think a vague (and in my opinion quite likely misinterpreted) recollection from 20 years ago is actually a fair representation of his thoughts, compared to his published work.

And I say this as someone who disagrees with Becker on a huge amount - but he's not a monster.
