Actually, according to the review, other stuff led to the civil war; see last few paras in particular. This was just how people did stuff back then. Sure, they did it about the war in the 1850s. But they did it about other stuff in the 1830s.

The book doesn’t argue that the violence caused the Civil War. But I do suggest that it was an an accurate representation of—and shaper of—public opinion about the state of the Union.
