I don't know if you can say Lee recruited Kirby. It was more like Kirby was looking for income anywhere in the post-Comics Code collapse and after he was blackballed at DC by Jack Schiff.

Kirby was looking for work and Lee was more than happy to give it to them. Lee certainly gave Kirby more of a free hand than Kirby had at DC (where he was forced to emulate the house style).

I agree, but recruiting implies Lee sought out Kirby. I think the motivation was more on Kirby's side (for economic reasons) than it was on Lee's side.

If Kirby had more options he wouldn't have gone to Atlas (a bottom rung publisher). But with death of Joe Maneely, Lee was looking for a new star artist.
