Jordan Peterson has been repeatedly celebrated as one of the leading thinkers of our time in the New York Times.https://twitter.com/shujaxhaider/status/1058359188278120448 …

This simply cannot be understated. Jordan Peterson says that planets organize themselves into a hierarchical social structure because the big planets have more mass than the little planets pic.twitter.com/sYxtfej0Zj

It's a bit -- a bit -- disingenuous to treat even a bad metaphor as literal.

I think it's a fair reading of Peterson that he doesn't see these comparisons as metaphors but as proofs of his central claim, that hierarchy is natural.

It sounds to me like he's saying nature is red in tooth and claw (ie, Hobbes). Do we accept this or take it as a challenge to rise above the prevailing standards of inanimate objects?

The same mechanism that causes a Pareto distribution in the mass of planets causes a similar distribution in the inequality of income and wealth: compounding returns. Larger planets pull in more matter. Those with more wealth can make more opportunities.

As someone who’s not a fan of Jordan Peterson, it’s getting a bit concerning how he’s taken out of context, over and over again. All this does it reinforce his criticisms of the left and eclipses the legit critiques of his sometimes incoherent and transparently biased philosophy

Natural processes like planet formation is certainly one place where hierarchy doesn't exist.
