I think the light footprint was incredible at being effective while husbanding our resources. The problem is always, “okay what now!” And unless you’re willing to later patrol every footpath in Afghanistan and Pakistan, they just come back.

If you set expectations correctly you can keep a light foot print for the long term. Biden proposed this in Obama’s first AFG review. But the expectations piece is hard. Obama couldn’t stomach losing provincial capitals and the pol price. Not sure where Trump will go post Mattis.
