I must say I am unconvinced by the argument, as the distinction is moot if white nationalists hate the Jews *as a race* and not as a religion. If such is the case, conversion changes nothing to the situation.

You're missing the point. It's not about the feelings of white nationalists. it's about people who should know better (especially Rep. Epstein) positioning someone as a Rabbi who hews to a faith that (while he's entitled to it) has echoes of the worst times in Jewish history.
