Your pro-tip was phrased much better than mine, btw.

"banning abortion" is no more "paternalistic" than "banning" other forms of killing. it only becomes "paternalistic" if you do not believe the life being protected is worthy of protection.

This is only true if you think women don't deserve bodily autonomy.

and this is only true if you don't think the unborn deserve protection of their bodily autonomy, something they are in no position to defend themselves

The idea that cells should have bodily autonomy but full-grown women shouldn't is, I would say, paternalistic.

Yes, if you choose to frame it in the most disparate way, sure. But many pro-choicers cannot allow for any in between ground: a 40-week old fetus on the verge of birth is still "cells", deserving of no protection.

Obviously many pro-lifers draw a line at the other end where conception = life and a woman's "bodily autonomy" ends.

The pro-life position is that life begins at conception and abortion is never allowable. Anything other than that is a partial pro-abortion position.

Right, and I understand there is little appetite for compromise on the pro-life side. But this is partly because of the nature of the position. If you believe the unborn child is a life, it's hard to swallow compromise on taking a life.

Right and it's a position that is (definitionally) paternalistic: the state has to take job of parent & defend putative life. You could say it's morally obligatory paternalism but it's still paternalism.

OK, well, I can agree with you there. "paternalism" is generally seen as pejorative; not too many liberals tout their social welfare programs as "paternalistic."

Enjoying your respectful dialogue on opposing ideals. But I have to ask about the "40 week abortion", surely that's just b.s., isn't it? I've only heard of such a thing from pro-lifers and Trump....
