On the other hand, liberals see a lot of social welfare programs as trying to protect the innocent and helpless, conservatives see it as liberals trying to do things with other peoples money.

[Sadly, in my opinion, conservatives have gotten way too comfortable doing *other* things with other peoples' money since we've largely failed to cut gov't spending, which I admit undercuts some of our positions.]

Pro-tip: in life, it's good to judge people by their actual behavior, not their professed ideals.

Of course... and those I know who are pro-life (or anti-choice in your framing) value life tremendously and believe strongly in adoption, helping unwed mothers, etc. I am sure you profess the same experience in your circle of pro-choice friends.

Another pro-tip is that it's good to not judge people based on preconceived notions about their behavior based on a perception of their professed ideals.

Your pro-tip was phrased much better than mine, btw.

"banning abortion" is no more "paternalistic" than "banning" other forms of killing. it only becomes "paternalistic" if you do not believe the life being protected is worthy of protection.

This is only true if you think women don't deserve bodily autonomy.

and this is only true if you don't think the unborn deserve protection of their bodily autonomy, something they are in no position to defend themselves

The idea that cells should have bodily autonomy but full-grown women shouldn't is, I would say, paternalistic.

Yes, if you choose to frame it in the most disparate way, sure. But many pro-choicers cannot allow for any in between ground: a 40-week old fetus on the verge of birth is still "cells", deserving of no protection.

Obviously many pro-lifers draw a line at the other end where conception = life and a woman's "bodily autonomy" ends.

You know the “cells” argument is bad one, right? That full grown woman was once just a group of cells and still is just a more highly functioning grouping of living human cells, biologically speaking. I’m amazed we have no compassion for those groups of cells we all once were.

I’m just curious, do you make any other argument about any other thing where your argument would have justified someone killing you?
