i've decided religious thinkers like kierkegaard, auden, and pascal are too much of a bummer and have settled on jamesian pragmatism as my personal philosophy

Another middle ground is Chesterton, who was religious but not gloomy (there are parallels between the early Chesterton of "Orthodoxy" & James).
