I'm old enough to remember when the US defended its alliances with appalling dictatorships on the grounds of regional security needs and/or the larger fight against a greater evil, not on the grounds of profitable arms sales.

Can simple personal economic interest be ruled out, though? If that's what's driving it then defending it on the basis of other Americans making money is hardly more honest than previous status quo (indeed, it would be less honest as previously it was admitted to be about oil).
