The original "centuries-old" version of the story, as codified by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 has Snow White be 7 years old at time of story (and biologically that age on marriage). The more modern Disney version made her more mature to make people more comfortable.https://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1052726304615747584 …

Oh well if Kristen Bell is uncomfortable we should probably discard centuries-old fairy tales https://twitter.com/USATODAY/status/1052626065301143552 …

Also the "centuries-old version" had evil Queen "forced to step into the red-hot shoes [made of iron & heated in burning coal] and dance until she fell down dead." Not sure I would recommend it to kids.

The interesting thing about mountebanks like Shapiro and Jordan Peterson is that they think the Disney version of fairytales is an accurate representation of ancient stories, rather than a heavily modernized 20th century version of old plots.

All those stories tho, they’re metaphorical. I think they can be taught to kids but need to be explained & discussed

The point is if we've retold these stories once, we can always modernize them for the 21st century.

It’s not the Grimms: it’s the folk tale that’s like that. And it’s not more misogynistic than it is a cautionary tale. It’s applies to anyone, it’s a métaphore.

Cinderella's sisters, to fit into the glass slipper, chop off their toes and heels. The shoe fits and the Prince must marry - until he sees the blood pouring out of it.

As a kid, I tracked down the originals of all those bloody fairy tales. I wasn't allowed to listen to the radio or watch anything but PBS, but my parents let me read anything printed in a book, thank G*d
