Having lived in Alberta for a few months now this is pretty much the attitude that guarantees you win elections here. I'm not saying Alberta is the dumbest province because Ontario exists but it's very dumb in a very unique and distinct way

I think the strategy is actually offering this excuse, “We have it uniquely hard here so you outsiders have to give us our way” to everyone everywhere, no matter what the facts about the “hard place”’s dependence on subsidy really is.

It works in the US for Red states, glossing over their being net consumers of public support. Whiners everywhere love the idea they can use this dodge. And not one of them twigs to the inconsistency or incompatibility of everyone having their way all the time.
