It was a deal - Lionization in exchange for insidery stories.

As with so many other people, we should have listened to Didion about Woodward.

Her piece in the NYRB from 1996 wad a blistering takedown by a brilliant writer correctly exposing Woodward as a mere stenographer who never pauses to assess his sources or the impact of the events he is recording. The MSM' s fawning over him is pathetic throne sniffing.

The flaw in all of Woodward's book is the way he lionizes those who are his sources. I respect the quotes in his books and he gets stories -- but he is not a very critical writer.
