Tom Friedman wasn't a bad reporter. But when NYT made him Foreign Affairs columnist, he stopped describing the world as it is & saw the world as he desperately wanted it to be. That Saudi Spring article was & remains an embarrassment.

I recall reading, though I’ve been unable to find it since, a lovely piece about how moderate Bashar al-Assad was going to be on account of his western education. It struck me as naive at the time and you can guess how it’s aged.
