Feels like a weird bank-shot play by the WH here, playing up China to play down Russia. "Focus on foreign threats, but not that one" is a tough message to sell. Likely net effect seems like a good one -- an electorate more focused on Chinese and Russian threats.https://twitter.com/joshtpm/status/1047887513908629505 …

One thing that's completely unclear is what exactly China can *do* with all this information it's gathering. (I'm not saying it can't do anything, but like ... how useful is internal network traffic from JP Morgan?)

When I was a kid there was a Captain Kangaroo (the reboot) skit about a guy who spies on a widget factory, then tries to recreate it. The widgets turn out wrong because the secret sauce was in the way the workers did things. This is what Chinese espionage feels like.

On your view, isn't running advertisements in Iowa meddling? Or does meddling consist only of fake social media campaigns, not the usual techniques used by powerful interests in the US?

This wapo report gives one a very mixed feeling about the allegations -- especially when Amazon and Apple are denying it even occurred. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2018/10/04/china-inserted-surveillance-microchip-servers-used-by-amazon-apple-according-report/?utm_term=.b9a11c0e12d9 …
