I'd say it falls under the "highly selective flagship state university campuses" umbrella. As does McGill, at least for non-Quebecers.

Sad truth about those industrial sports apparatus, is that in a lot of schools, they fund whole other departments normally deemed unprestigious or unprofitable. Like journalism, history, foreign language, literature...

When I was at U of T, the comparison school that we aimed to emulate (at least in the Dept of Political Science) was UC Berkeley.
