1. There's some forgotten social history here. Kids drank a lot in the 1970s and 1980s but then there was a push back. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) created in 1980, Drug Abuse & Resistance Education (DARE) in 1983. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1047569138472968192 …

4. The O'Roarke stuff should remind us that 1980s were key point where a certain type of Frat Boy achieved (in the Marxist sense) a class consciousness. The Frat Boy stood for white male liberty against prissy moms as well as feminists & POC.

It's crazy adults under 21 can't drink in the states

IIRC, individual states could certainly set the age back to lower. 18, even. But the feds threatened to withhold highway dollars from any state that didn’t comply.

Class of '82, a number of kids in my class (primarily popular "good" girls) were members of SADD. They still partied, but they put up signs, spoke at rallies, etc.

We had a SADD chapter at my HS (89-93). As a joke, a bunch of upper classmen elected a well known drunk as the president. Ultimate irony - he was later paralyzed in an accident he caused driving drunk.

Thanks for reminding me that I'd forgotten all about P.J. O' Roarke...and will again soon. What a creep. Guessing his talkshow appearances were wingnut welfare as his writing was awful too (tho yes less creepy than Judge).
