There were definitely some strongly progressive TV shows in the 70s, but on average I think they were as sexist and bigoted as period films.

Shows like All in the Family, Maude, MASH, WKRP, although clearly of their times in many ways, at least attempted to address these issues. This would also have to do with long-running series being able to reflect on earlier seasons, something a movie can't do.

The 1970s itself didn't usually hold up from the perspective of appropriate racial and gender humor, even while it was taking place.

The Sure Thing was actually a rejection of typical 80s teen comedy movie values. Haven't seen it in a long time, but I suspect it holds up.
