What we're living through is the failure to have our last round of civic-democratic advances put into the Constitution. Instead they were merely legislated, and now getting rolled back. An absence of new constitutional amendments will be a sign that we biffed this round as well.

A common line of argument I hear about this is how similar it is to arguments for more dysfunctional systems. i.e. Soviet Union just wasn't communist enough, it should have had more communism to really become the Utopia that it promised. How do you argue against that?
