It's not even the issue of nuance, exactly, that has me upset—Stan Lee's political messages were subtle as a brick. But, they were parables, stories, using characters of diverse and conflicting motivations, not cardboard cutouts dictating approved political beliefs to the reader.

Yes, and I think you are wrong on a number of grounds (Lee didn't really plot those stories, just added dialogue, which was far cruder & more card-board cut out than the norm in modern comics). It helps to know some history.
