I read the piece once again, and I don't see how the context exonerates him. Harris has a particular view about Islam/Muslims (which many see as bigoted) and sees right wingers/fascists, not liberals, as approximating his belief best. The context isn't a game changer.
"Most sensibly" clearly means that there is some sense to be found among fascist views on Islam, in fact more sense than anywhere else. Those of us critical of statement object to that since we find sense on Islam from non-fascist sources.
