I read the piece once again, and I don't see how the context exonerates him. Harris has a particular view about Islam/Muslims (which many see as bigoted) and sees right wingers/fascists, not liberals, as approximating his belief best. The context isn't a game changer.

What do you think "that particular view" is? He is clearly talking about religious extremism, and warning that it was growing in the West and could become a threat. This was from 2006, and he was absolutely right.

The "context" does not exonerate him in the eyes of those who believe his framing of that "context" is bigoted. I was contesting the idea that those attacking Harris did so because they misunderstood his contextualised views. That is not so, as Jeet has shown here.

I have an alternative theory: Jeet jumped on the quote without knowing the context (he called it "disturbing"). After realizing the context changed what he thought was the meaning of the sentence, he doubled-down, unable to ever concede a point to his opponents.

So you think he is lying? Where is the evidence of this?

I mean I don't think it is farfetched to believe that a liberal could find a "gloom and doom" Harris approach to Muslims/Islam punctuated with "the fascists are most on point here" bigoted. There are many academics and writers who would agree, even with the right context in mind.

He never said the opposite, so if I was correct he wouldn't be lying. And again, Harris is making one very specific point: extremism within Islam is a problem, and only far-righters are *speaking clearly* on this. "Fascists are on point" implies he also supports their policies.

This is going to sound weird to you but many of us don't think that fascist are the only ones "speaking clearly" about extremism in Islam. In fact, we think fascists are speaking falsely on this issue.

Where did I say "that by criticizing Islam, Harris holds fascist views"?
