It's no more hypocritical of the descendant of immigrants to oppose immigration than it is for the descendants of anyone to not have children. Stephen Miller's problem is that he's perpetrating evil, and it wouldn't be in the least exculpatory if this were a family tradition.
I don't think Will was defending Miler's stance on immigration in any way. What he was saying is that what's wrong with his stance can't be condemned simply on basis of family history.

Right. Hypocrisy has nothing to do with family history. The kid of wealthy slave-driver who becomes an abolitionist is not hypocritically "pulling up the ladder" for others who might profit from slavery. He's just doing right. Miller is just being atrocious on his own steam.

Yeah, I see these “but he’s descended from immigrants!” stories as akin to trying to expose the hypocrisy of a racist’s bigotry by reminding him that, as an Irish American, his forefathers were themselves discriminated against. Not only will it not work...

...but it misses the fact that the double standard is the entire point. It’s precisely because Miller doesn’t see the commonality between his ancestors and a Syrian that the charge of hypocrisy fails.
