V.S. Naipaul 1932-2018. A powerful novelist who at his best (A House for Mr. Biswas, Bend in the River) approached Conrad and even the shadow of Dickens. Of the man himself, it's perhaps best to remain silent.

I told my partner that Naipaul had died. Bella, our 7 year old, overheard and asked what we were talking about. Me: "A writer who just died." Bella: "Was he good or bad?" oh boy....

Me: "He was both and bad." Bella: "What do you mean?" Me: "He was a good writer. He wrote wonderfully about Trinidad, Africa, and India." Bella: "Why was he bad then?" Me: "He was mean to people, especially girls." Bella: "Why?" Me: "Some people are just mean. You know that."
