I told my partner that Naipaul had died. Bella, our 7 year old, overheard and asked what we were talking about. Me: "A writer who just died." Bella: "Was he good or bad?" oh boy....

Me: "He was both and bad." Bella: "What do you mean?" Me: "He was a good writer. He wrote wonderfully about Trinidad, Africa, and India." Bella: "Why was he bad then?" Me: "He was mean to people, especially girls." Bella: "Why?" Me: "Some people are just mean. You know that."
